These blouses, called huipiles, because of the shape, are iconic of the Isthmus of Oaxaca. They are still worn by many Zapotec women of the coast there. Tehuana huipiles of this quality of craftsmanship and materials have become rare. Sadly, the few that are produced now do not compare.

One of the nice things about these is how easy it is to adjust the size. One line of stitching on either side does the trick.

Currently this one has these measurements:
Chest 22.5"
Length 18"

It is a size small and is at its biggest now.

Both sides are embroidered with the same pattern.

These make wonderful wall hangings and I would be happy to provide a hanging dowel for them upon request.

The last trip to Oaxaca and the Istmo where these are made turned up very few of these old hand embroidered huipiles. I had known that they were hard to come by but not realized how nearly impossible they are to find now. So, this may be it! They are treasures.

If you are interested google Tehuana culture as it is fascinating. A matriarchal society where the feminine ideal is a strong woman of some girth! It is common in the istmo of Mexico to see these huipiles worn proudly displaying a big beautiful belly beneath.
